Last Friday, VanArts welcomed Double Negative Visual Effects (known in the business as “DNeg”) to our campus for the second time since the opening of their Vancouver studio. VanArts’ lecture theater was packed as Recruiter Sinead Butler and Animation Supervisor Aaron Gilman spent the morning with our current students in Character Animation, Game Art & Design and Visual Effects.

Aaron Gilman has been a creature animator for nearly 17 years, working at Meteor Studios, Tippett Studios, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and WETA Digital in New Zealand before his current position at DNeg. His feature film credit list includes Hellboy, Avatar, Alvin & the Chipmunks 4: Road Chip, The BFG, The Hobbit trilogy, and many others. For our students, he gave a talk on demo reels (The Dos and Don’ts of Getting Hired) and a presentation on quadruped animation for creatures, followed by a Q & A session. It was great for our students to gain valuable tips and insight from a seasoned professional at one of the world’s largest studios.

Double Negative has expanded their London operations to include studios in Vancouver and more recently in Mumbai, India, focusing on research & development and award-winning animation & VFX for feature films and television. Included in their massive team of artists are several VanArts graduates who have brought VFX for films like Star Trek Beyond and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to the screen. We look forward to seeing more of our students join their ranks for future projects, as the industry in Vancouver (World’s #1 Hub for Animation & VFX) is still growing by leaps and bounds.

Many thanks to Aaron and Sinead for supporting and inspiring our students. We look forward to the next visit!
