Bill Dwelly - Head of Visual Effects/Game Art & Design
William (Bill) Dwelly’s film credits include multiple Oscar-winning Avatar as Lead Technical Director at Weta Digital; I Robot & King Kong as Senior Animation Technical Director and Oscar-winning animated short Ryan. Bill has worked in the film and entertainment industry since the late 1980’s as a Theatrical Lighting Designer, a Cameraman, Pipeline Developer and CG Supervisor. Game Art & Design

Intro to 2D Animation

Within this course, you can see your drawings come to life as you learn the fundamentals of classical 2D animation. The principles taught in this course are the foundation for all other mediums of animation. Exercises include the bouncing ball, overlapping action, character design & animation of jumps, walks, performance & storyboarding.  For the final assignment, students use these principles to animate their own designed character.

Intro to Anatomical Drawing

This course is designed to teach the artist the basic fundamentals of anatomical drawing, and covers the human skeleton and muscles. Understanding anatomy is the foundation for creating believable drawings or paintings of the human figure. Anatomical drawing can also be applied to the creation of believable characters for animation, game art, or film.  This course is an excellent introduction to basic anatomy.

Character Animation Summer Intensive

This 1-month course, which runs annually in July, introduces students to the foundation principles of character animation, taught by our staff of industry professionals. 

Check out this awesome REVIEW by a student in our 2010 course! 

Students are assigned their own personal workstations and complete a series of fun action-analysis exercises such as the bouncing ball, character jumps, and lifting weights, both in 2D and 3D. 

Also typically included are life drawing classes, animation history, stop-motion presentations, and special guest instructors, including our annual visit by Bill Matthews, retired Manager of Artist Development for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Class sessions are held Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Students can also enjoy other fun events around Vancouver!   A certificate is awarded upon completion of the course.

Intro to Stop-Motion Animation

This is the only specialized course in Vancouver for the popular technique of stop-motion puppet animation. Students will learn the history of the medium and inside tips on how to build puppets using wire, clay, latex and other materials, and bring them to life frame-by-frame in front of the camera.

Animation is shot digitally but still maintains a classic hands-on approach. Exercises include clay morphs, facial expressions, dialogue, and much more! Taught by Ken Priebe, author of The Art of Stop-Motion Animation and The ADVANCED Art of Stop-Motion Animation.

Ken earned a BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, majoring in film & animation. He has worked as a 2D animator for several children's games and short films for Thunderbean Animation and Bigfott Studios. He is also an independent filmmaker, writer, puppeteer, animation historian and author of the books The Art of Stop-Motion Animation and The ADVANCED Art of Stop-Motion Animation.

Maya (Various Levels): Intro to Maya

(prerequisite to Maya: Advanced Environment Modeling)

In this popular course, you will learn the basics of modeling, lighting, texturing and animation using Maya, one of the most popular 3D software packages in the industry. Students will gain an understanding of the interface and capabilities of Maya, as well as basic principles of movement and models.

Projects cover topics such as shape deformation, basic polygon modeling and UV mapping, intro to set up layers and organize a project work flow, lighting and photo-realistic rendering, camera set up, character animation with F-curves, controllers and inverse kinematics, with the opportunity to work on a project. Final projects can be output to CD or hard drive. Students provide their own backup media and are responsible for archiving their projects.

Intro to Comic Book Production

In this course, students will be guided through the various stages of creating a four-page comic, including: script writing, character design, thumbnailing, penciling, inking, page structure, panel composition, and storytelling. Students will be using Adobe Photoshop to add lettering and greytones to their artwork, and explore how to develop a plan for pursuing their personal aspirations within the medium of comics.

Students in this course should have strong drawing skills, and you should budget approximately $50 for art supplies.

About the Instructor: Steve Rolston

Steve Rolston was trained in classical animation at Capilano College and spent some time drawing storyboards at AKA Cartoon and Barking Bullfrog Cartoon Company. He made his first big splash in comic books by illustrating the debut story arc of Queen & Country, which won the Eisner Award for Best New Series and earned Steve several other nominations including Most Promising Newcomer. Other comic credits include One Bad Day, Pounded, Mek, Emiko Superstar, Degrassi: The Next Generation, & The Escapists.  You can learn more about his work at: www.steverolston.com

Intro to Basic Drawing

This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to draw and primarily for students who are keen on our full-time programs, but need to develop their drawing skills for their portfolio. The very basics of drawing will be covered: composition, perspective, blind contours and structural life drawing (using nude figure models).

Students will have sketchbook homework assignments and be expected to draw every day in order to develop their skills. This course serves as an ideal preparation for developing a portfolio for the full-time programs at VanArts.
