"CREATING A WET MAP TO COMPLIMENT A FLUID SIMULATION"

This is the second workshop in the Houdini Case Study Course Series. Houdini has long been known for its ability to allow a user to “get under the hood” and tweak existing operators or create new, custom operators to take an effect to the next level of realism. This session will demonstrate just how easy it is to do this in Houdini without having to write any custom scripts or code. The majority of digital artists are just that -- artists, not programmers or coders with a degree in computer sciences.

Houdini "How Did They Do That?"
Case Study Series Workshop

VanArts is proud to present a special pro-level Houdini Software Workshop, delivered by expert CG artist Raymond Corbett.

"UNDERSTANDING & WORKING WITH THE “SOP” SOLVER DOP"
(burning fuse, explosion example)

This is the fourth workshop in the Houdini Case Study Course Series, and it explores and demonstrates the use and implementation of the mysterious “Sop” Solver Dynamic operator. When one starts to learn Houdini today, most will jump into Dynamic, SoftBody, Fluid and Fire simulations. There is a fair amount of material and example files that one can explore to get a handle on these simulations. Dynamic and Fluid simulations are a great place to start, and as many of know, they can be relatively basic on one end of the learning curve, but extremely complicated on the other.

"A PARTICLE BASED WATERFALL AND CUSTOM SURFACE DISPLACEMENT"

Within this course, you can see your drawings come to life as you learn the fundamentals of classical 2D animation. The principles taught in this course are the foundation for all other mediums of animation. Character design and basic Flash animation are also covered, and popular animated films are analyzed to aid in the students' work.

An excellent beginner's course!

This course is designed to teach the beginner the basics of digital life drawing. Digital life drawing is meant to apply traditional drawing and painting skills to the digital art form. The course guides the student through the basic use of photoshop, and the wacom tablet as it applies to drawing from the life drawing model. The course is recommended as a follow up to the basic drawing course.

This course is designed to teach the beginner the basics of color theory. The course guides the student through the fundamentals of color theory into the application of color theory to painting. Color theory applies to every art form from traditional painting on canvas, to digital painting for animation, games and film. This course will give the student the understanding of color needed to begin painting in any media.

This course is designed to teach the artist the basic fundamentals of anatomical drawing, and covers the human skeleton and muscles. Understanding anatomy is the foundation for creating believable drawings or paintings of the human figure. Anatomical drawing can also be applied to the creation of believable characters for animation, game art, or film.

This course is designed to introduce the beginner to the fundamentals of digital concept art. Digital concept art is the primary form of design for video games, feature films, and computer animation. This course covers current design techniques for characters, machines, environments, and creatures. No previous computer skills needed to complete this course.

This 10-week (30 hours) course includes lectures, discussions, camera, editing exercises, and culminates in the creation of a 10 minute documentary.

Students learn to pitch ideas and develop detailed story proposals so they may write, direct, shoot, and edit a short documentary. The accelerated hands-on approach of this course encourages students to begin projects immediately.

Topics such as film esthetics, narrative three act structure, Cinema Verite, experimental filmmaking, and screen grammar are covered in class lectures.

It is an ideal introductory course for anyone who is interested in the powerful non-fiction documentary format.

This course is an introduction to 3D modeling, lighting, texturing and effects animation using Maya, one of the most popular software packages in the film, TV and video game industry. Students will create their own character, environment & prop models and bring them to life inside the computer, also gaining an introduction to further modeling/sculpting techniques using ZBrush.  Elements of production for visual effects and entertainment art are explored according to industry standards, taught by our staff of professionals.  Students finish the program with a basic understanding of general 3D workflow, and a certificate upon completion.

This course introduces students to the foundation principles of character animation, taught by our staff of industry professionals.  Students are assigned their own personal workstations and complete a series of fun action-analysis exercises such as the bouncing ball, character jumps, and lifting weights, both in 2D and 3D.

Also included are life drawing classes, animation history, stop-motion presentations, and special guest instructors.

Class sessions are held Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Students can also enjoy other fun events around Vancouver!   A certificate is awarded upon completion of the course.

This is the only specialized course in Vancouver for the popular technique of stop-motion puppet animation. Students will learn the history and inside tips on how to build puppets using wire, clay, foam, latex and other materials, and bring them to life frame-by-frame in front of the camera.

Animation is shot digitally but still maintains a classic hands-on approach. Exercises include clay morphs, facial expressions, dialogue, and much more! Taught by Ken Priebe, author of The Art of Stop-Motion Animation.

This continuation of our Level I course focuses mostly on modeling in Maya.

Projects cover topics such as shape deformation, basic polygon modeling and UV mapping, intro to set up layers and organizing a project work flow, lighting and photo-realistic rendering, camera set up, character animation with F-curves, controllers and inverse kinematics, with the opportunity to work on a project.

(prerequisite to Intro to Maya Level II)

In this popular course, you will learn the basics of modeling, lighting, texturing and animation using Maya, one of the most popular software packages in the industry. Students will gain an understanding of the interface and capabilities of Maya, as well as basic principles of movement and models.

Applications are now available for our annual Media Arts Boot Camp in 2010, for BC high school students only.

Boot Camp recruits will have the opportunity to receive one week of hands-on training in one of these two courses:

Media Arts Boot Camp

This course will take students through the VanArts experience, introducing them to the variety of different programs we have to offer.  They will be able to see how each program is unique, while seeing how they can also complement each other in the large scheme of the industries we train for.

In this course, students will be guided through the various stages of creating a four-page comic, including: script writing, character design, thumbnailing, penciling, inking, page structure, panel composition, and storytelling. Students will be using Adobe Photoshop to add lettering and greytones to their artwork, and explore how to develop a plan for pursuing their personal aspirations within the medium of comics.

This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to draw and primarily for students who are keen on our full-time programs, but need to develop their drawing skills for their portfolio. The very basics of drawing will be covered: composition, perspective, blind contours and structural life drawing (using nude figure models).

Students will have sketchbook homework assignments and be expected to draw every day in order to develop their skills. This course serves as an ideal preparation for developing a portfolio for the full-time programs at VanArts.
