Wayne Gilbert - Head of Animation

Wayne Gilbert has two Clio awards and has worked on productions ranging from Hulk Mountain Dew commercials to Care Bears to Star Wars, Mummy 2 and award-winning video games. Wayne graduated from Sheridan College in the mid-1970s and began his animation career on a television special titled Witch's Night Out, then on to Nelvana for animation & background work on specials & commercials, and serving as Background Department Head for the feature film Rock & Rule. After leaving the studio life to freelance, he instructed and coordinated Sheridan's Classical Animation program. During this time he made two short films, Bottoms Up and Traffic Jam, which screened at the Annecy Animation Festival in France. In 1996 he was recruited to help set up the Walt Disney Canada studio in Toronto, then headed to ILM where he worked for 7 years transitioning to computer animation, and making two more short films, CPU and the award-winning Let Go.  Wayne returned to Canada in 2005 to work as Senior Animation Director at EA Black Box on the award-winning games Skate and Skate II.

3D Character Animation

"My experience at Vanarts has been amazing. During the 2 years studying 2D and 3D animation, its been a lot of hard work and many late nights, but without those challenging exercises and well balanced classes that gave us more one-on-one time with the teachers and hard work, I wouldn't be where I am today."

-Agata Matuszak, Animator, CIS Rainmaker

"One year after leaving Vancouver, within 2 months I got a job and I am now in Mexico City directing my own series at a new animation studio.  It has been one year of hard work, in which I have been gladly applying all I learned at Vanarts."

-Cristian Cardenas, Animator, Mounstrito Federal

"While I had some professional animation experience prior to attending VanArts, there's no way I would have been able to achieve what I've done without taking a year off to study there. I took the 3D animation course, but I feel the 2D experience I had at VanArts has been just as important (if not more so) in my career. VanArts' inclusion of classical animation, life drawing, and animation history in the 3D course is absolutely essential for turning out animators who know where their art form comes from and where they might take it in the future."

-Galen Fott, Founder/Director, Bigfott Studios

"I have a few friends who are still in college and its always incredible to see the contrast between the quality of teachers at VanArts versus other colleges. Its really the difference between night and day, ... the work experience and knowledge I learnt from experienced artists such as yourself has been irreplaceable."

-Lyndon Nadel, Steel Beach Productions

"My experience at VanArts gave me lots of useful principles, hints and a
better idea of where to direct my career; surrounded by a nice environment with
good friends and great people with my same passion."

Ignacio de la Rosa - Ollin Studios, Mexico

"I love the fact that you can work at anything you put your mind to and the training that I received from Vanarts really helped me achieve the goals that I've set out for! Since graduating from VanArts I've had opportunities in many facets of the animation industry. I started as a character and environment modeler at Mainframe Entertainment. After some time in modeling I decided to try a different focus within lighting and compositing at (CIS) Rainmaker. In time, I found my interest for the storytelling, animation and camera leading me into the position I now have been in for just over two years. As a layout artist my training and experiences include a broad range of film techniques, including storyboarding, composition, cameras, animation, lighting, modeling and so much more. I am currently working as a layout artist at Weta Digital."

-Scott Eade, Artist, WETA Digital, New Zealand

"VanArts provided me with the tools and instruction as well as the structure to fullfill my visions. As a graduate I have worked as a 2D animator in television and a 3D animator in feature films."

Mark Pullyblank - Animator, WETA Digital, New Zealand

"I spent one more year in Japan working 3 jobs at the same time to save up for the VanArts 3D program.  I am totally satisfied with my choice and could not have had this quality of education in Japan.

After graduating, I got 3 job offers in Japan and I chose a CG production company that is one of the biggest in Japan, called Shirogumi. They are making VFX, animation (2D
and 3D) and also miniatures for film, TV and games...great experience for my first job!"

-Yuta Sano, Animator, Shirogumi Inc.
