about

Wayne Gilbert - Head of Animation

Wayne Gilbert has two Clio awards and has worked on productions ranging from Hulk Mountain Dew commercials to Care Bears to Star Wars, Mummy 2 and award-winning video games. Wayne graduated from Sheridan College in the mid-1970s and began his animation career on a television special titled Witch's Night Out, then on to Nelvana for animation & background work on specials & commercials, and serving as Background Department Head for the feature film Rock & Rule. After leaving the studio life to freelance, he instructed and coordinated Sheridan's Classical Animation program. During this time he made two short films, Bottoms Up and Traffic Jam, which screened at the Annecy Animation Festival in France. In 1996 he was recruited to help set up the Walt Disney Canada studio in Toronto, then headed to ILM where he worked for 7 years transitioning to computer animation, and making two more short films, CPU and the award-winning Let Go.  Wayne returned to Canada in 2005 to work as Senior Animation Director at EA Black Box on the award-winning games Skate and Skate II.

START YOUR APPLICATION NOW

Developed by Wayne Gilbert, our Head of Animation, the VanArts Character Animation Program is based on the same methodology Wayne developed for Disney Canada, Industrial Light & Magic and Animation Mentor. You will work alongside your instructors in a dynamic studio setting in which learning replicates industry experience. Students and instructors become an intimate team of creative minds working side-by-side in innovative collaborations.

Our program respects the intense 12-month study time frame by focusing on animating and character performance. During that time we will challenge you to push the limits of your creativity. Your first goal is to produce a high quality demo DVD showcasing your character animation skills, worthy of presenting to the major animation studios of Canada, the USA and around the world. This demo DVD becomes the passport to your first job in the industry. Your creativity and commitment to the craft will guarantee your success.

The program’s singular focus is training future Character Animators. Our 2D and 3D students share lectures, assignments & reviews, and work closely together as a team. Extra life drawing is provided for 2D animators, and Maya is taught to support the 3D stream. If you share our vision and are dedicated to your craft, then we look forward to welcoming you to VanArts.
