Disney's Bill Matthews Inaugurates New Campus
Jul 21, 2010

Bill Matthews Inaugurates New VanArts Campus from VanArts on Vimeo.

On Friday, July 16th, our annual guest Bill Matthews cut the ribbon to inaugurate our new campus, alongside VanArts President Alan Phillips.  The same day, Bill also happened to be turning 79 years old, so our staff & students also wished him a Happy Birthday.

Bill Matthews is a founding member of our Advisory Board and served for many years as Manager of Artist Development for Walt Disney Feature Animation.  He has been involved with VanArts since the very beginning of the school 15 years ago, acting as a mentor and guide to our animation students during his annual visit every summer.

Steve Kirby visits Digital Photography Dept.
Jun 22, 2010

Steve Kirby is reputed to be the best re-touching artist in town, and VanArts' Digital Photography students were fortunate enough to have him visit.  Steve demonstrated some of his techniques that have earned him a jaw-dropping client list, including Italian & US Vogue, Calvin Klein, Mac Cosmetics, Avon and the worldwide Ad Agency DDB.  His delicate touch produces beautiful, seamless results that had our students gasping at his before-and-after case studies.  This glimpse at what can be achieved with the right creative eye, skilled hand and patient mind is sure to have the DP students working hard to live up to Steve's high standard, and their portfolios are sure to reflect that!

From all of us in the Digital Photography department, thank you Steve!

Steve Kirby's company is The Image lab, currently based in Vancouver BC.

Steve Kirby can be found tethered to his trusted iMac.

Actors and Photographers Unite for Headshots
Jun 3, 2010

Last week was a busy one at the studio, with students from our Acting for Film & Television and Digital Photography departments working together in a joint Actors' Headshots workshop.  Ross den Otter and Sarolta Dobi of the successful Pink Monkey Studios are experts when it comes to actors' headshots.  Ross works mainly with the photography students on lighting, posing, and creating depth in their images, while Sarolta (also a photographer in her own right) coaches the actors on how to connect with the camera and sell themselves as marketable performers. Make-up students from Blanche MacDonald volunteer their time to provide the hair and make-up styling, making for a great team and a fun couple of days.

Fashion Week in Digital Photography
Jun 3, 2010

The senior Digital Photography students have just finished their Fashion Photography course with some really great results.  Students had 4 full-day workshops where they had the opportunity to photograph some beautiful models from the Lizbell Agency, Mode Models and Next Models. Professional hair and make-up for every shoot was provided by Ashley Gesner, Negar Nooshmand and Marlayna Pincott, with every look styled by professional stylist and instructor Heidi Farnola.  Photographer Greg Swales guided the students in capturing contemporary and marketable images.

Student photographer Madhava Musterer did such a great job during the workshops, his best image is now on the Lizbell Agency models homepage!
